Equity by Design: Designing with Underserved Communities: Erika Harano

Healthcare is only responsible for a small part of our health. The social determinants of health are everything else that make up health. These are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. Think employment, education, housing, access to clean water, etc. The burden of poor social determinants of health is not equally spread across the world. Underserved populations - groups with fewer resources such as money, knowledge, prestige, power, and beneficial social connections - experience it more. In this track we will discuss how we can focus our efforts on reducing social and environmental barriers that keep people from being healthy, how we can impact these determinants through design and how we can begin addressing root causes of health inequities.

Erika Harano Abstract:
At Creative Reaction Lab, we believe that oppression and inequity are by design, and that we can use design to dismantle them. In this talk, Erika Harano will introduce Creative Reaction Lab’s Equity-Centered Community Design (ECCD) framework and discuss how it is distinct from dominant design frameworks. Erika will share how we can use ECCD to examine the ways in which identities, history, and systems of power impact design and decision-making, with a specific focus on health and healthcare systems, and will introduce some key tools to disrupt inequitable design.
