Healthcare is only responsible for a small part of our health; social determinants of health, the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age play a much greater role. Like access to healthcare, access to other resources like employment, housing, education, food, and safety are not equitably distributed at the local, national, and global level. In this track, we will discuss how social and environmental barriers disproportionately affect marginalized communities and how we can begin to impact these determinants through design.

Erika Harano Abstract:
At Creative Reaction Lab, we believe that oppression and inequity are by design, and that we can use design to dismantle them. In this talk, Erika Harano will introduce Creative Reaction Lab’s Equity-Centered Community Design (ECCD) framework and discuss how it is distinct from dominant design frameworks. Erika will share how we can use ECCD to examine the ways in which identities, history, and systems of power impact design and decision-making, with a specific focus on health and healthcare systems, and will introduce some key tools to disrupt inequitable design.
