The digital transformation of health: balancing speed, innovation and ethics
The digitalization of health, from clinical trials to disease management, presents an opportunity to exponentially improve both outcome and experience. But with new technologies comes the responsibility to imagine new unintended consequences.
Can health tech ethics be considered without slowing innovation? What can we — as designers, developers, executives, entrepreneurs, employees, and consumers do to spark our “ethical imagination?” Does health tech require a new code of ethics?
In this talk, Sara will share why our ethical frameworks must evolve for the digital age, and how we can collectively build the capacity for more thoughtful, inclusive, and respectful digital contributions to our health  – and humanity.

Keynote: Deborah Brown
Incorporating Human-Centered Design into Policy Development; or, How I Learned to Let Go of All My Natural Instincts and (Try to) Embrace Chaos

Deborah's talk will cover two major points:
  1. human-centered design as a valuable and necessary tool for grappling with complex municipal needs; and
  2.  her personal evolution in understanding and utilizing human-centered design.
Design thinking is not natural or instinctive to her, and in many ways it contradicts her training and experience as a regulatory lawyer and advocate. She has found that learning to embrace the tenants of human-centered design has been instructive professionally and rewarding personally, and it is very much (and appropriately) an iterative work in progress.

Keynote: Sara Wachter-Boettcher
Building an inclusive design practice
We all go into projects with good intentions—we want to make things welcoming, seamless, and maybe even fun to use. But without a process for ensuring our design decisions are also inclusive, equitable, and fair, our products can end up with all sorts of biases embedded in them. At best, these biases leave people out or let them down—and at worst, they can do real harm. From “smart scales” that assume everyone wants to lose weight to form fields that fail for queer people to exercise trackers that trigger disordered eating, we’ll look at the ways narrow thinking and unchecked biases can wreak havoc. Then, we’ll talk about what we as designers and user advocates can do about it: how we can uncover assumptions in our work, have difficult conversations with our teams and companies, and use design as a wedge to open the door for a more ethical and inclusive way forward.

Does Anyone Speak Healthcare?

We live in an era when healthcare is getting more complex, not less. Health literacy is low, due to a combination of the complexity of the system, the complexity of the human body, and the state many people are in when they come to us. Patients and their families or friends are stressed, scared, and struggling to focus at the times they most need to use our websites, read our articles, or interact with our devices. This can lead to anything from higher costs to misused prescriptions.

It’s up to us to as health and design professionals to bridge the gap. Our work can educate, guide, even build connections for patients and their families to work with their healthcare providers and payers. Let’s look at examples of how it can be done well, and what you can implement to make a difference.

The Mediatrician’s Guide to Raising Healthy, Happy, Effective Children in the Digital Age

Michael Rich, MD, MPH
Center on Media and Child Health
Boston Children’s Hospital

I lost my child to her smartphone – what can I do? Kids are spending more time on screens than in any other activity. With greater connectivity, children are increasingly anxious, sleep-deprived, and defiant. Parents are fearful, but clueless on how to help. Tech and entertainment producers are experiencing, and sometimes contributing to, a Luddite “techlash.” Building on international research and clinical experience with Problematic Interactive Media Use (PIMU), The Mediatrician investigates, translates, and innovates at the interface of the media children use and how they use them, studying how that use affects their physical, mental and social health and offering practical, compassionate and humorous advice on raising the leaders of tomorrow.
