Equity by Design: Designing with Underserved Communities: Lone Laegreid & Ingrid Viddal
Healthcare is only responsible for a small part of our health; social determinants of health, the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age play a much greater role. Like access to healthcare, access to other resources like employment, housing, education, food, and safety are not equitably distributed at the local, national, and global level. In this track, we will discuss how social and environmental barriers disproportionately affect marginalized communities and how we can begin to impact these determinants through design.

From Innovation to Execution: Julia Jackson
How can organizations overcome the hurdles of bringing in new innovation cultures into their work process? By now, many of us are familiar with the “big ideas” of innovation cultures in organizations: collaboration, co-creation, empathy, iteration, and more. But bringing these ideas into our organizations and infusing them into our work, in a way that is sustainable, repeatable and scalable has been a challenge. Hurdles of time, participation, resources, understanding, and risk/change-aversion often hinder our attempts. In this track of presentations, we’ll share first-hand stories of the successes, challenges, and practical take-aways that teams have encountered as they’ve worked to overcome these challenges to build cultures of innovation in their organizations.

This presentation will highlight the key social determinants that may be addressed by this financing mechanism, covering in detail one example from the field, as well as providing insight into the potential impact of these types of interventions on vulnerable populations.

The Science of Behavior Change Design: Amanda Graham
Title:
Three keys to evaluating the effectiveness of digital behavior change interventions (and how not to hate your data)
Abstract:
Digital behavior change interventions often have a leg up on other behavior change modalities in terms of the wealth of data available for analysis. We can often track every action that users take in our interventions, knowing how and when they engage – and when they disengage. Metrics of engagement can play a key role in understanding the ways in which our interventions are driving meaningful behavior change. But what happens when results look wonky? When users appear to be doing precisely the things we think they should, but outcome data tell a different story? Drawing on a series of analyses from a randomized trial of over 5,200 smokers in an Internet smoking cessation study, Dr. Graham will discuss three key concepts related to evaluating digital behavior change interventions that every intervention designer and evaluator will want to know.
Track abstract: Behaviors are among the most important factors that influence health. Our attempts to improve the health of those who are ill (e.g., initiating and adhering to treatments), those who are well (e.g., stopping smoking) and those who deliver care (adhering to evidence-based guidelines) all depend on behavior change. Designing (more) effective behavior change interventions requires more than just intuition and creativity, it requires the application of behavioral science – its theories, its methods and its evidence through every phase of the design process. This track will feature relevant talks focused on underlying theories and techniques from behavior change science and how they can be applied to the design and evaluation of digital and mixed-mode interventions.

The Science of Behavior Change Design: Molly Waring
Social media delivered behavioral weight loss interventions: what type of engagement matters, and how do we elicit it?
Abstract:
Greater attendance and participation in behavior change interventions is typically associated with better outcomes. Objective engagement data from digital behavior change interventions can provide insight into specifically what type of engagement leads to better outcomes. Using data from our recent studies testing behavioral weight loss interventions delivered via commercial social media platforms, Dr. Waring will describe what types of engagement are associated with greater weight loss, and efforts to understand how best to elicit meaningful participant engagement. Methodologic approaches are relevant to behavior change interventions in other areas.

Behaviors are among the most important factors that influence health. Our attempts to improve the health of those who are ill (e.g., initiating and adhering to treatments), those who are well (e.g., stopping smoking) and those who deliver care (adhering to evidence-based guidelines) all depend on behavior change. Advancing Wellbeing: Andrew Schutzbank
Good health and wellbeing are fundamental human goals – we all have a desire to feel good and function well. While good health is often clinically defined as the absence of disease or impairment, wellbeing takes a much broader perspective integrating physical and mental health, positive emotion, vitality, personal fulfillment, meaning and satisfaction in life. In this sense, wellbeing is achieved when we feel good, and capable to realize our aspirations, satisfy our needs and cope with the inevitable challenges life brings to our pursuit of the good life. This track will feature talks focused on the determinants of wellbeing and solutions intended to advance the wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Content Strategy and Health Literacy: Emily Broderick
How do we tell the story we want to tell while building meaningful relationships with our audience? How do we communicate in a way that people can understand and relate to? And how do we do we determine what content and message is most appropriate and relevant? This session will dig into these questions and more to help you enhance digital communication and engagement with health content that matters.

Emily Broderick Talk Abstract:
Plain Language is for Everyone: Writing Content that Improves Health Literacy
Only 12 percent of adults have the skills to obtain, process and use online health information, according to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy. And in fact, a recent study by Nielsen Norman Group discovered that even highly educated online readers want clear and concise information that is easy to scan. Compound those facts with stress or illness, and the importance of writing health content with plain language is evident.

The healthcare industry overflows with digital and print content that is overly academic and clinical. Health marketers and writers play crucial roles in breaking down barriers for patients and caregivers. The challenge is writing compelling web that can be understood by a fifth-grade audience – which is the standard – but does not sound overly-simplified or dumbed down. And it can be even more challenging to convince clinical leaders that plain language is preferable to medical jargon.

In this presentation, we’ll discuss what health literacy and plain language are and why they’re essential to increasing conversions and loyalty. We’ll cover how to write in plain language, including understanding your audience, organizing content for scannability and using active voice.

Advancing Wellbeing: Jay Patel

Talk abstract:
Destination: Health Fluency

Imagine traveling in a country where you don’t speak the language, where you struggle to understand the most basic signage. A handful of vocabulary words and the rudiments of grammar help you get by, but imagine how much better your experience would be if you were truly fluent.

In this session, you’ll learn what health fluency means, how human-centered content strategy and creation help people move from literacy to fluency, and why making that shift matters to your organization and the people you serve.

Title: Look Good, Feel Good: Not just the hashtag to a fashion diva's selfie.

Abstract:  Image Matters! Beyond the functional role of keeping us warm, protecting us from the elements, and meeting legal/policy expectations in public and in the workplace, clothing also serves an important symbolic role. Both aspects have measurable impacts on our health and wellbeing. This session will explore qualitative bottom-up consumer research of not only people who identify as having a disability, but also those with physical or physiological needs that impact their consumption of apparel. Krystal will discuss the limitations of products and shopping venues, how powerful “dress” can be on our wellness, and how her venture strives to revolutionize the apparel experience through designing products and spaces that embrace three core concepts: 1) image very much does matter, 2) the experience of clothing starts long before getting dressed and, 3) body diversity as the norm.
