Latrice Peterson

William Paterson University
Student
Latrice Peterson is a 26 year old Sickle Cell Warrior born and raised in NJ.  Even though Latrice was diagnosed at birth, she did not have her first crisis till the age of 3. Latrice’s mom knew things were going to be difficult for her. She made sure to instill courage, bravery, hope, and faith that God would bring her through.
After high school Latrice’s hospitalizations became more frequent and severe. Which also made her aware of a lot of the problems that the sickle cell community faced. So she decided to join in the fight. At the age of 24 Latrice started advocating. She started by sitting on panels to speak to different nurses and staff at her hospital. She also began by educating her church and community about getting involved. This past year she began traveling attending the Conventions and conferences, and the SC consortium Summit where she is now a partnered patient advocate. Latrice say’s that she doesn’t want to just bring awareness to her community but to the world.
Latrice will continue advocating so that she can educate others on sickle cell. Her desire is for doctors and Hospitals to be informed so sickle cell patience receive better care and  better quality of life. Latrice will now be attending William Paterson University where she will be studying to become a nurse practitioner. So that she will be able to do her part in making a difference in the sickle cell community.
